The newly promoted English Premier Football league team called West Bromwich Albion was founded by William MC Gregor and a group of men from a Spring Works Company. The team was not originally called Albion, instead the team was originally founded in 1878 as the West Bromwich Strollers. It wasn't until 1880 that the team was renamed. One of West Broms claims to fame is that they were the first team to incorporate the word Albion into their name. West Brom was grafted into the Birmingham & District Football Association one year later. This action gave the team the recognition it was looking for. The first official trophy ever captured by the West Bromwich Albion was the Staffordshire Cup. They won this trophy in 1888.

West Bromwich Albion have an illustrious history, they won the football league title in the 1919-1920 season. This would later prove to be the one and only time they would capture this title for their side. In 1930 they again showed their fantastic qualities by winning the FA Cup. From the season of 1948-1949 the team had its longest unbroken run of 24 years in the top flight.

In more recent times West Brom seem to be one of those teams that yo-yo's up and down between the top 2 leagues of English football. The 2010-2011 season will see them playing in the top flight, the English Premier League once more. Roberto Di Matteo will be hoping that his team do much better than they did in their last season of Premiership footy.
